One of the primary functions of the Huhugam Heritage Center will be the storage and preservation of the Community's archaeological, ethnographical, and archival heritage. Archaeological collections from the Central Arizona Project Repository and the existing collections in the Cultural Resource Management Program will constitute the majority of the Center's holdings. In addition, archaeological collections from other tribal and non-tribal lands will also be stored and preserved at the Huhugam Heritage Center.

The Huhugam Heritage Center retains a sizeable archival collection which includes historical documents, photographs, and oral histories.

Frequent seminars and ongoing training insure that the collections staff of the Huhugam Heritage Center meet or exceed all federal and traditional standards of care and curation.

One of the special collections preserved at the Huhgam Heritage Center is the Breazeale Basket Collection. The Gila River Indian Community purchased the collection consisting of 84 Pima baskets in 1997. These baskets comprise a nearly intact collection, the majority of which are documented in the book Pima Indian and His Basket, written by J. F. Breazeale in 1923. The collection is unique because the weavers of many of the baskets can be identified and because they have named some of the designs.
